The next edition of wordpress is near. With the release of wordpress 2.6 just days away it’s getting time to prepare our blogs for the update. Are you set to go or will you push the update back a couple of weeks?
The second beta version of wordpress 2.6 has been released a short while ago and the scheduled release for the final is nearly there. Probably on Monday but in case it doesn’t make that it’s going to be next week at latest according to the roadmap.
So are you prepared for the upgrade? There’s usually the several steps to walk through before engaging in an upgrade like this such as checking if all your plugins are ready for the next version of wordpress, having backed up both your database and wordpress files just to be sure and obviously reading in on the great new features the next wordpress will have to bring you!
Myself I don’t use too many plugins and those which I use have given no issues in the beta version of Slevi running the first beta version of 2.6. Have a glance at the plugins I got running over there:
- Adsense Manager
- Akismet
- Clean Archives Reloaded
- Exec-PHP
- Feedburner feedsmith
- Fulltext feed
- Google XML Sitemaps
- In Series
- Lucia’s Link Love
- MBLA
- Optimal Title
- Popularity Contest
- Search Meter
- Subscribe to Comments
- Top Level Categories
So in case you’re using any of these plugins and wondering whether they work with wordpress 2.6, well by the looks of it they do without any problems. I can’t guarantee you anything but so far I haven’t encountered any with them!
Backing up is something I do frequently already anyway just to be certain so I already have several backups available if needed but will of course make another one just before the upgrade to make sure. It’s a bit of a funny sight in my backups folder, got over a year worth of backups there and still growing bigger.
Will you do the upgrade?
Myself I tend to do upgrades in general rather quickly although there have been times in which that was different. How about you? Will you do the upgrade right now or will you rather wait a couple of weeks to ensure it really works well?
One of the major reasons for me to do the upgrades ASAP isn’t so much because of the regular new features added to it but the improved security the newer versions of wordpress come with. After all a secure blog makes a happier blogger!

Thanks for this - I’ll definitely be doing the upgrade, but I’m very nervous about how it will affect my site. I think I’ll probably wait a few days to see if the early adopters have any major issues.

I know the feeling, when I just began blogging I felt the same. Unsure of what the wordpress updates would do, even worse what in case something would go wrong.
A nice feature which will be added to wordpress to make this all a bit easier is the automated updates. Not sure if it was directly with 2.6 along or not, but otherwise probably 2.7. A simple one-click to update similar as to how the plugins can be currently updated will for a lot of bloggers probably be more reassuring than having to do it manually through their ftp server.

hm…if things go well, the upgrade will take place shortly before I get the new design for my blog. And since I plan to dump a few plugins I can hope I won’t get into trouble with the next release.
