Giving wordpress 2.6 beta 1 a spin

Last touched on Saturday, Jun 28, 2008

Since my beta blog was just sitting around doing nothing during the past couple of days I decided to make more active use of my playground again and installed the wordpress 2.6 beta 1 on it to give it a go.

With it just being a beta blog filled with random rubbish and serving no other purpose than being my own little playground I didn’t have to worry about anything here and could do as I desired. So without backing it up, taking any of the preperations or all the other things usually adviced I took the plunge.

As usual it was easy as hell to finish the wordpress update, 3 simple steps did it all:

I wouldn’t recommend doing it on your live blog, but in case you’re like me and have a personal playground to do all your fooling around in and play with the design and whatever more with consequences give it a go. See for yourself how it’s running, myself I haven’t run into any problems so far.

Several of the new features include the word count which appears under the draft saved notice, keeping track of how much you’ve typed nearly instant. I’m not sure exactly what the dynamics behind it are though as it does appear to be stalled a bit at times, hopping over to a new paragraph always seams to do the trick of upgrading the count.

Another nice little change is the plugin page appears to have gotten a makeover, separating inactive plugins from the activated plugins. Currently taking a look at my list for example it’s quite a mess, numerous of inactivated plugins I once used are amongst there which I haven’t come across deleting yet. The 2.6 upgrade will give a much clearer overview on which I’m using and which can be deleted in the future.

One of the most interesting changes perhaps is the post revisions, although I do not often revise posts I do have the occasional edit the wrong post and notice later ending up having to rewrite the content. Revisions will be making stupid mistakes like these so much less troublesome!

Roughly 2 weeks left till it comes out of beta and the final version is ready for launch, they have said a stretchback possibly to the 14th of July but I don’t think it’ll really be necesarry. Keeping that in mind I’ve started preparing Slevi for the update, there are some other changes coming along for Slevi with just the wordpress update as well on which the finer details will be revealed along with the arrival of 2.6 so hang on tight!
