It’s uncertain, just as it’s been uncertain throughout the past years on the game already till early this year it got canceled. Cryptic studios being rumored to have picked up the rights though and currently displaying a mysterious counter on their site sparks up the hopes though.
At massively the news popped up in a report a couple of days ago when it was noticed a counter was placed on Cryptic’s site displaying a counter placed over a piece of Star Trek Online concept art.
Could they be hinting at some major announcement in regards to Star Trek Online? Perhaps at Comic-Con? It’s purely speculation but the counter on Cryptic’s site runs out on the last day of Comic-Con.
Massively also questions whether the wait for STO would be worth it, personally I think it will be. Star Trek is a multi-million if not billion dollar concept which has gained a huge fanbase all over the world throughout many ages, the potential for games based upon it are great as has been seen in previous Star Trek games.
Especially with an MMO the wait might perhaps even do it more good than bad, the Sci-Fi MMO genre is just picking up some more popularity with the majority of the players still being oriented towards fantasy games. This time could allow for such change in the playerbase but aside from that also let the gaming industry mature a bit more being able to present a Star Trek MMO which includes the planetary travel, space ships, different cultures, etcetera in a believable fashion which really makes you think you’re part of the Star Trek universe.
