Nearly three months now after the release of 2.5 and even less after the release of 2.5.1 a preliminary date for 2.6 has been set. By the looks of it 2.5.2 which was scheduled to come in between will never reach daylight.
The currently planned date for the arrival of wordpress 2.6 has been set to the 7th of July, although it could be pushed back to the 14th if necesarry. Directly with that the roadmap also shows us a potential date for 2.7 which is currently up for release on the 10th of November.
Whether 2.5.2 will still be released before the release of 2.6 is uncertain, it currently doesn’t have a release date set in the trac so it might be skipped and just passed on directly with 2.6.
Once more this release will come with a great number of bug fixes and multiple new features as:
- Theme previewer
- Word count
- TinyMCE 3.1
- Plugin auto-installation
- Wordpress auto-upgrade
- Post revisions (wiki style editing of posts)
- And various other new features
That all gives us some nice new toys to play around with as bloggers, and it’s just a couple of weeks away! So do yourself the favor up front and prepare yourself for the update ensuring all to go smooth once it rolls out.

Hehe yeh at times it feels like “wow, a new version there already?”. Especially had that with 2.5.1 which came in relatively no time after 2.5. But overall I like the speed with which they deliver out update in around a 3 month period of time between the major steps.
It’s perfect time to ensure staying up to date with potential security threats and asides from that it’s definitely a great thing for the addition of new features like the tag cloud last year and improved admin interface with 2.5.

The TinyMCE update will resolve some issues I’m seeing with the post editor, in the admin area.
I can’t wait for the final 2.6 release to come out!
