Tired of WoW? Check these upcoming MMOs

It’s hard to keep track of all the upcoming MMO’s, especially with so many around. Casualtygamer.com decided to make a list though of what it believes to be the 12 best upcoming MMO’s in the RPG and FPS genre.

It’s quite an extensive list filled with details, this top 12 put together by casualtygamer. Even though I do not agree on all the positions assigned to the games and would disagree entirely on Requiem: Bloodymare being part of the list let stand on a number 3 position it all comes down to personal preference in the end.

Various other games though like Aion and Darkfall for example are definitely great potential games, especially Aion will most likely have a great amount of success with in particular in the Asian countries. Nonetheless I think most of these fantasy based RPG’s will probably be overrun by Warhammer Online, rated on number 1 in the list and definitely with good reason.

Guild Wars 2 which has been ranked a number 4 position is something which probably will also have a great amount of success, not because of what info it’s released so far but because you just buy the game and no additional costs will be made with it in similar style as with the original guild wars.

Added to that within guild wars 2 the developers are aiming for less instanced gameplay which was a major turndown for many gamers but more persistancy in the worlds instead. If that is played out well the combination of subscriptionless gameplay and an mmo which offers a persistant world could change the genre forever.

Titles like APB, Stargate Worlds and EarthRise also definitely belong on the list although little is currently to be said about how succesful such games will be. It’s a huge difference from what is expected in MMO’s these days and remains to be questioned whether that works in their favor or not.

However I do think even if these games in particular will not have the success they hoped for they probably will have set a path for future developers to make use of as those particular genres begin getting more attention.

One thing is certain, there’s too many great titles coming up for us mmo players to get bored in the upcoming years.

Discussion on this Article

  1. What I like is that most of these games try to push the envelope storywise, not just regarding the gameplay.

  2. Agreed, although there’s still a long way to go it’s good to see it’s starting to get more and more emphasis. So frequently it’s just being forgotten or rushed into the game, a real shame.

Have your say

Like many others I'm a slave to modern society dominated by mass media, I can be hooked on the latest series for months without missing a single episode or simply having to see a certain movie.

And if you thought music wouldn't be included there, you're dead wrong! Practically non stop I listen to music from various artists, I just can't stand the silence anymore.
