100k potential testers strong and a powerful franchise to back it up, will this be enough for stargate worlds to bring it success or does it need some professional backing.
After having been in development for quite some time already stargate worlds is slowly heading close for beta and with that the beta registration pool has been growing ever since it opened up last month. Currently they’re on over 100k applicants already and that figure is still rising.
The amount of press they’ve been getting along with that shows no sign of that figure to stop from rising, just recently they popped up in an interview on mmorpg.com for example.
Some interesting points popped up in the interview, for one it seams that the beta is not quite there yet unlike what many probably would have expected if we look at the following quote.
Beta signup is open right now and Ybarra expects that closed beta will begin in the next couple of months to begin working on “pocket worlds”, that is testing situations in quests, missions and combat. The community site is also being revamped and will soon contain a knowledge base and game information.
Apparently it’s still a couple of months before players might be getting to see the first ingame glimpses, whether that’s going to be end June or perhaps later on in the summer is just totally up to simple guessing right now as nothing conclusive has been mentioned so far.
After launch, the Live Team will be writing “Atlantis” era material and current content – for example, mentions of Ancient Technology and puddle jumpers – are oriented to lead up to the current TV timeline. The gameplay model will also follow the TV model in that it is episodic and mission based. The quest logic is the vehicle to carry the story, and provides the backbone of how the player progresses.
That surely sounds interesting, of course the game will have to show how well this will be implanted but in case the game can hook players on in a similar fashion as the show as to simply wanting, or perhaps better to say needing, to know what’s coming next and what the next missions will have to offer they’re probably going to be up for a solid subscriber base.
The danger though would lie within the episodic based part, if it is played through too quickly boredom is a definite risk which might arrise. How will the “side-game” or endgame content be within Stargate Worlds to counter this?
It’s a good thing to read in the interview though that the game will be kept as close to the original story as possible, of course it’s understandable that this will not work on all fronts but it will ensure that the feeling of stargate is kept to it as much as possible rather than it sharing no more than a name.
