A new face

Time to shake hands to the next version of Slevi, it took some time to fix but it’s here, finished and bringing new life into this place.

After working on it for about 3 weeks, not even mentioning the thought process up front on how I wanted the new Slevi to be like, it’s finally here. The entire design process began with playing around a bit in Photoshop where I made some simple mockups of how I could see things changing, setting certain demands for myself and trying to match those as closely as possible.

Several weeks later here we are, the new design has gone visible to the public. Perhaps a bit earlier than expected even but the transaction went extremely well.

There were various things I kept in mind all the way though when working on this, there were simply certain mistakes which I made in the past and definitely didn’t want to do again. After about two years of blogging certain lessons have been learned, a bit slow perhaps but better late than never I’d like to say.

  • Less dark, more whitespace - Although it’s definitely not the most whitespace you’ll ever see on a site, it has some white to it again! The days of extreme darkness are over as the days of light have arrived.
  • Better readability - Black on white was fun for a while, but black on white simply reads a lot better. Asides from that the font size has also slightly increased, set on 16 now rather than 14 for main text.
  • More possibilities of customization - Whereas the previous design locked me in a lot I’m going to be have a great potential of expanding and adding to the current content with a lot more ease.

There are various features already integrated directly which liven things up a bit rather than just having the entries, moving away more from just being a blog.

Of course as with any project there are limitations to be run into, the same took place this time. A lot of this has been overwon although certain sacrifices had to be made. All in all I’m pleased with the result and will most likely be sticking to this longer than 9 months!

Discussion on this Article

  1. I have been busy for quite some time, so excuse my late reply :)

I really like your new design, pretty easy to the eye when reading your articles. Good job :)

P.S.: Is it me or are you writing even more articles a day now?

  2. Thanks :)

Definitely agree on the easy to the eye, the white on black went okay for a short period of time but it was rather tiring for my own eyes even and I actually knew what was written, let stand just coming by the article and reading it then.

And it’s not just you, I’ve began writing some more. Definitely from February on my writing activity dropped down a bit with the least in April, being just 8 entries.

Main reason for that was the way how I cut off entries on 2/3 paragraphs to go to the full entry page on which I didn’t want to just have 1 paragraph. For many things on which I desired to write I simply didn’t have 6 paragraphs or more on text which I could place down so I simply skipped it.

Having begun using excerpts for on the main page to be added to the paragraphs within the entry I gave myself the chance to write these entries with just 3 paragraphs as well.

Have your say
