Spam is a common issue on the net, or these days even well beyond it, but it’s definitely not always automated and unfortunately doesn’t get filtered out at all times either. As a blogger it’s a thing which I get to see more than enough unfortunately and there’s definitely no sign of an end coming to it. Within the last month alone I have received over 5000 spam comments, which is way more than I expected at first.
What I’m starting to see more and more as well are posts like “Great post!”, “Keep it up” and etcetera. Although it might not look like your average buy viagra, free pr0n or insurance company sales crap form of spam, it’s still a form of spam because it simply adds nothing to the entry made.
Many bloggers stick a lot of time and effort in their entries, even though they might enjoy the blogging they’re doing it’s still something which costs time and it’s always nice to see some appreciation back. In case you’re seriously trying to comment it shouldn’t be hard to come up with a comment which forms at least a sentence even if it’s just to show a little effort back.

The problem is that some people genuinely just want to say that they enjoyed it. I’ve had people do this and not leave any link at all. Unless they are just crap spammers?

if it is a “Nice blog” or whatever short comment reply, then it is also a kind of spam.
Fortunately I rarely receive spam though Askimet filtered a lot of “Buy WoW Gold” and the like. I believe those “WoW” spam comments started showing up after my comment in your WoW article, Slevi

It’s not so much simply the short comment on itself, it’s the way they hide their spam link within their name. And on many if you actually search on the name they use you’ll find comments from them pop up on many do-follow sites and such with similar comments simply stating “great post!” and such.

It’s sad that spammers have created a situation where we have to question compliments on our websites. With Akismet, I don’t see too many problems, but then again, I’ll delete almost anything if they leave a Viagra link as their website.

Should Askimet fail and you loose trust in it, you can always add a captcha as an addition to your current spam safety measures, Stefanie
and about the Viagra spam…first of all we now encouraged them to send Slevi such spam comments…anyway, I find it kinda funny if a female blogger receives spam about Viagra…

Well viagra has shown to have a certain effect in reducing the effect of jetlag so it’s no longer just a male drug ;). And of course for older men the best excuse to have viagra :P.
