New year, new chance to impress your readers. Tell me, what would you do differently if you were able (or decided) to go back and start your blog again? Would you try to update more often? Post more pictures? Or perhaps you would talk more (or less) about your personal life? Would you recommend someone new starting a blog? Why or why not?
Have been out of the blog talkers loop for quite a while due to holidays, an exam and starting my internship but let’s do one again for a change. It’s an interesting question as well when thinking about it, or should I say an entire bundle of questions.
If I would start my blog again there isn’t much I’d change probably since the learning curve I’ve had with Slevi has been great and most likely very interesting. You could probably say that what I’ve learned about blogging, wordpress and everything around it is as fun as the writing itself. Even still it’s an ongoing process of getting to know more, learning new techniques on writing, seeing what works to get in visitors and what doesn’t and etcetera.
The only thing I still should work on isn’t so much posting more or less often nor using more or less pictures within my entries but write more lasting material. Of course that is something which requires more time and planning than the average entry so I simply haven’t come around to it yet, but I do hope that in 2008 I can start working on more of that.
If someone new would start a blog I would definitely tell them to do so, although I would discourage them from trying to become a pro blogger, having some great hope of making a living from their blog. Many of those simply get disappointed with a lower amount of visitors than expected, can’t come up with a niche to write about and after a month or 2~3 already ditch the entire blogging thing.
Rather I’d recommend them to write for themselves, pick out what they like writing about and go for that. Whether it’s personal, educational, political, religious or any field you can come up with it’s something which can be written about after all.
What I wouldn’t like to see new bloggers do too much though are the common mistakes of joining up with too many memes, 2~3 seriously should be the max you should do within a week rather than 10 a day. Another thing is not too make every single post a sponsored post, a mistake I made for some time as well I must admit but definitely not great for a blog, your own opinion and thoughts should stand out rather than just a row of sponsored posts.

You have a lot of great advice in this post! A lot of it I wish I’d come by secondhand, instead of having to learn the hard way.

Thanks :), guess my advice isn’t always useless then ;). Learning it the hard way isn’t such a bad thing though I must say, it’s a great way of having it stick and getting to know exactly what goes well and what doesn’t.
