When digging through my archives a bit I came across an entry which mentioned the spam I had to suffer from, a grand total of 800 spam comments in May earlier on this year and wondering if that would one day increase up to 25.000 spam comments like pretty much all blogs which have been around for longer have “achieved”.
Well, I’m not on the 25.000 mark yet, but it’s going in that direction fast! Currently over 11.000 comments have been marked as spam, this is an increase of well over 10.000 since May and thus over 1.000 spam comments a month on average. The current figure is actually much higher than that as it’s still rising exponentially and has already reached around 2.500 a month.
Reaching that 25.000 is just going to be a matter of time now rather than a question of whether I will receive it or not, if the amount of incoming spam would finally stagnate it would take around half a year to get to that point but I highly doubt it’s going to last that long.
If I should give a prediction for the total of received spam by the end of 2008 I’d guess the number would be around 75.000~100.000, after all the amount of it is still increasing so rapidly there just doesn’t appear to be an end to it.
At times like these I’m glad I use Akismet, this spam filter saves me so much time by filtering out around 99% of it all. Without it it simply would be impossible to keep a blog up on which comments would be enabled for long, you just wouldn’t have the time to work your way through all the junk.

Hi Slevi — gosh, that sure is lots of spam. Imagine if you could actually package it and sell it! You could get that expensive item on your Christmas list from the profits!
I thought I had a problem but gee, I would hate to be having to spend so much blog time in deletion mode.

Haha, now that would definitely be a nice thing, I bet especially problogger.net would be happy with that looking as to how he reached the milestone of over 1 million spam comments received a couple of months ago :P.

Interesting to see, a month later I have already surpassed 15.5k spam comments. This means I received 4k spam comments within the previous month and the figure is still rising rapidly. I might reach the 100k mark sooner than expected.

Just for the records: “Akistmet has protected your site from 52,773 spam comments already”. The rise of comment spam is still going on rapidly, following the current trend the 100k mark might even be reached as early as September.
