That’s what it’s going to be like this year when it comes to the lessons in which we learn how to examen patients and do the doctor-patient talks, today I had the first lesson for this year and I must say that you definitely notice the difference in time compared to the two hours we had to follow last year.
Although four hours is still less than half of a workday later in life, as a student it’s quite a lot to have in a single go, you can take my word on that. Asides from being a bit tired I must say it wasn’t bad, the teacher, trainer, mentor or however you’d like to call it appears to be quite experienced and unlike many others combines his lessons well with humor. Definitely important when it comes to not having the single lessons appear as if they’re lasting for ages, that’s a fact.
We only had interaction with a “patient” during half of this session since it was formed into an introduction lesson to the new year, apparently they realized us students were in need of this after the summer holidays. Having a session like this though was quite a good thing I’d say, I’m sure it came in handy for quite some people.
It’s going to be interesting to have full sessions with simulation patients without directly receiving a grade for it at the end, just to see how things will go without the lot less of stress behind it. Unfortunately these sessions aren’t scheduled in frequently, so it’s going to take a month or something before the chance is there again.
More books and assignments
On another note I just received a verification again of yet another book to be delivered, apparently they went for just one though so there’s still no sign of the last book and when that will actually be coming. Since the book does contain quite some info required for the upcoming exam I hope they’ll have it ready quickly, it was said it should be coming in the beginning September after all.
One day to go before the weekend, going to be a somewhat longer day again although not too much. I suppose I’ll take the weekend to finish a bunch of assignments I still have standing open just to be sure I’m done with them again for the week. Works quite well to have them done before the end of the week, made the last two weeks a lot less stressful and since the classes take up quite a lot from it those also become easier to understand.

Welcome to the medical world lol Now apply that to actually seeing patient while being overbooked for 8 hours a day and no time for lunch.

Yeh guess that’s true ;). Although there’s a major difference from a class and the real deal of course :P, during the interns done so far it was 8~9 hours a day as well quite packed together but it feels totally different since you’re doing so much more and seeing a lot more than a single patient within half a day, that wouldn’t be very efficient at all, hehe.

Sounds very interesting. I’m wondering if you’ll become a Dr. House type of a doctor…

Haha, well if you mean by personality I don’t think so. In real life situations going to the extreme of doctor house probably would leave you without patients quite rapidly.
When it comes to doing the function of internist that’s still open for thought. Not quite sure yet on which direction I’ll be going for, surgeon is something which sounds very attractive as well but the waiting line for becoming a surgeon is long and these days nearly everything is done laparoscopically which is starting to somewhat take off the appeal the specialism of surgeon had in the past.
The function of internist is quite interesting because at that stage a lot is still open, the entire thinking process of what could possibly be wrong with the patient has just begun. And unlike when functioning as a general practitioner you will have to deal with a selected few cases which got sent through to the hospital (at least here that’s the case, definitely not in every country since in some people can go to the hospital by own choice).
I got about 4 years left though for reaching my first degree, specializing comes after that so do got quite some time of thinking my options through and seeing what would be the best option :).
