Back to Vista, Ubuntu saying goodbye for now

Back in February I moved over to Linux Ubuntu with my laptop, this worked out quite well with a couple of issues through the months I used it but sticked with it longer than I’ve managed to do ever before I must say. About a month ago then I decided to give it an update to version 7.04 of Ubuntu, this installation gave me some problems but after a while I got it running quite smoothly.

Overall I must say that Ubuntu has been quite nice, but also quite a pain since it didn’t support quite a lot of Windows applications which I frequently used and I didn’t want to go through the process of installing Wine for it as for me an OS should just be ready to run things out of the box.

So today I decided to switch back to Vista, which I actually used for about half a year before as well. At the time I used the Pre-RC1 for pretty much the lot of that time and it ran quite well, when trying to replace it with a new installation as the beta was about to end though my laptop kept shutting down being overheated. The temperature issue was still going on now during the installation so I was forced to install it with a fan being placed onto the bottom of my laptop whilst it was standing open like a pyramid on my desk.

The temperature issues were also bugging me quite a lot during the latest Ubuntu installation already, wanted to give it a look at the fans now at first to see if I could clean them perhaps but unfortunately I couldn’t find a screwdriver which would fit the tiny, little screws. I guess I’ll ask my dad when he’s home again to give it a look some time.

Currently I’m mainly busy though with installing my needed applications, so far I have Firefox, Daemon Tools and VLC covered but I’ll still have to get Joost, WinRAR and a bunch of others to be installed as well along with of course the things like Office, Photoshop, etcetera.

I will continue with it for a bit more today, but going to call it a day in a bit though as it’s starting to get quite late. I must say that the installation went surprisingly quick, lasting just 38 minutes. Now perhaps some might score faster easily, but my laptop is quite crappy when it comes to the memory it has being just 512MB, so it was sort of a good performance for it.

Overall that laptop is quite crappy though as I look at it now, but well yeh, what can you expect from a system which is about 2 years old. Luckily laptops are getting cheaper these days, back then they started at pretty much 850 Eur and mine cost about 1150 Eur. Nowadays though they’re pretty much starting at 500 Eur already and there’s quite a good selection of laptops available in a range of 700~900 Eur already. The Core2 Duo counterparts of them though are like 200 Eur extra or something, but I guess by the time I’ll buy a new one to replace my current one also that will have gone down in price again as well.

But I’m not really planning on buying a new one for about at least a year, sort of want to spend at least 3 years with a system before I add a new one to the collection. One thing will be for sure though on the next one and that’s that it’ll have some more memory, probably one with 4GB by then which should be a noticable improvement on itself already compared to the 512MB of now.

The last thing for today is probably going to install Office whilst watching some television, will be requiring Office tomorrow to continue with studying for next weeks exam again so should be having that ready.

Have your say

Like many others I'm a slave to modern society dominated by mass media, I can be hooked on the latest series for months without missing a single episode or simply having to see a certain movie.

And if you thought music wouldn't be included there, you're dead wrong! Practically non stop I listen to music from various artists, I just can't stand the silence anymore.
