Progress on spitfire going nicely

Rather quickly am I working through the spitfire modeling disc, it definitely was a good thing to continue on modeling rather than starting with texturing already as I am still learning more and more on how to work more smoothly with maya. I must admit though that my results are becoming better when it comes to solving problems and making a solid model.

Spitfire 1

As you can see it all started out rather basic, just creating a hull for the plane to give the basic shape from which was being worked. Although currently it will definitely not fly yet, it does give the basic idea.

Spitfire 2

The basic shapes for the wings have been added to our spitfire, now from here on we’ll be working mainly on detailing the plane after we set on the basic back wings.

Spitfire 3

It is quite taking shape of a plane here as it has been duplicated onto both sides, but far from finished yet, it doesn’t look smooth as you expect from a plane and I wouldn’t want to be seen flying in this thing.

Spitfire 4

After having polished it up a bit it became a bit more smooth, asides from that perhaps not so much a visible change the hull and wings have been united into 1 object to work from.

Spitfire 5

Having set in the area for the flaps this image with the reference material included shows as to what still will have to be created and how progress is going. If you ask me it is looking quite nicely already but still a lot has to be done. In the end though my computer crashed at this point as well so I had to redo it again, second time went a lot faster though than the first time. I no longer had to come up figuring out on how to bypass an issue with 3 sided faces and directly planned the section for the creation of the flaps making it a lot less rounded.

Now just a couple of years to go before I can model like a pro ;).

Discussion on this Article

  1. Looking good! Though you are not finished yet the plane looks awesome! Wish I had those sorta skills you have on modeling, real nice

  2. Thanks :), but it’s not that good if you ask me. I still have a lot to learn but practising a lot definitely helps. It’s fun to do so I’ll keep on doing it for a while, hoping to get better and better results everytime.

Have your say

Like many others I'm a slave to modern society dominated by mass media, I can be hooked on the latest series for months without missing a single episode or simply having to see a certain movie.

And if you thought music wouldn't be included there, you're dead wrong! Practically non stop I listen to music from various artists, I just can't stand the silence anymore.
