I decided to jump in one of the tutorials from Simply Maya this time and the med lab just seemed to be a nice pick for that. A tutorial lasting many hours covering both the modeling and texturing of the scene would be a nice challenge, if I might say so, which is going quite well.

Starting out with creating a basic layout for the scene there is not much to see yet, also there is no atmosphere or whatsoever present yet in the room. It’s basically still just a dull, old and gray room in which you definitely wouldn’t want to be living.

The room begins taking shape as we added a couple of bookshelves, a painting and adjusted the door and walls to be less straight. Somewhat you can get a bit of a feeling what this room is going to get like, but still it lacks a lot. Let’s bring some change into that!

Having added a couple of tables and more feeling to the door we are slowly starting to work our way to the foreground and adding scenery as we do so. Our room is beginning to be formed and will slowly start to get a lab look to it.

The main change probably is the addition of lighting here which immediately gives another look to this room, but also there have been added 2 fire-bowls next to the door opening and something which perhaps is placed a bit bad being a box under one of the tables, vanished into the shadows. Also the entire bookshelves have been filled up with books. An annoying and time-taking process if I might say so, but it does give a completely different look to the room.

More and more is slowly being added to the room to give more feeling to it, a blackboard in the background and rings on the floor which will hold our table later on. I must say the room is really beginning to take shape and I’m definitely starting to get the hang of things more and more. In the past just about everything I did was box modeling, but a lot here is done by working with planes and such as well which gives me a good foundation to learn from.

Our table has been placed and it really gave the room another look if I might say so. On the floor at first water was added in the tutorial, but I decided blood would be a better thing to have there, would suit the situation more where a sort of Frankenstein like creature is being created. The redness could use some work though, since currently it doesn’t really look like blood. People paying close attention might also notice another light source has been added, this gives a more realistic feeling to the set as in real life light never comes out of just one direction either. Still it is far from real though with just 2 light sources, but that’s something to work on later.

Some technical gadgets have been added into the scene and a light has been added into the corridor. The gadget on the ceiling is a bit big though, making it’s shadow cover just about the entire room and you can barely see the thing itself anyways, so that’ll be something to change. The rings on the floor have also been smoothened up like a couple of other things by rendering them as sub-divs rather than polygons, giving the room a nicer look to it.

Having reduced the size of the thing on the ceiling definitely worked out nicely. Also the gadgets have gotten some extra details to bring them to life a bit more, looking a lot better if you ask me. To finish off this day we added a sample dummy onto the table which will turn into our Frankenstein sort of creature.
I’ll continue working on the room for a while now, there’s still 3 video’s on the modeling of the room, then after that texturing will begin. The texturing will probably take some more time, but it will truly give the desired feeling to this room and having the expected result of bringing this all to life.
