It appears that Adobe and Symantec are behind the ongoing investigations on Microsoft’s upcoming operating system windows Vista by the EU. They have complained at the EU for Microsoft bundling free software with this operating system which basically would form a threat to their products.
One of these would be the free alternative to, XPS (XML Paper Specification). Unlike with PDF it would also be completely free to create your own XPS documents with this, saving you lots of money on third party products. Symantec had to complain about a critical security feature which would disable other applications, including malicious software, from hijacking or altering the windows kernel.
So what are we seeing here? Microsoft is finally making some good moves and improving both usability and security, then they get two major companies complaining at the EU since those two can basically foresee how this means less profit for them. Especially in case of symantec it’s nice to see how not the customers security is up front but their own cash flow.
It is a shame to see that these companies are going this far already to try and get essential features being removed from a greatly improved operating system, but I guess that’s the reality we’re facing.
