Another victim to the RIAA, this time it’s Edonkey, along other software versions as mentioned. Whether edonkey was used frequently, and perhaps mainly, for illegal resources it’s a shame to see that a network which could also be used for the sharing of legal resources got basically forced to shut down like this.
According to court documents filed today MetaMachine, the company behind eDonkey, has agreed to pay a $30 million dollar settlement to the RIAA and cease distribution of its eDonkey, eDonkey 2000, Overnet and other software versions.

The edonkey client sites by now have been replaced by a nice RIAA message claiming that your IP has been logged, looking like the following:
The eDonkey2000 Network is no longer available.
If you steal music or movies, you are breaking the law.
Courts around the world — including the United States Supreme Court –
have ruled that business and individuals can be prosecuted for illegal
downloading. You are not anonymous when you illegally download copyrighted material.
Your IP address is XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX and has been logged.
Respect the music, download legally.
Appearantly in the eyes of RIAA it’s even worthy to log your ip even if you never used the client but just visited the client’s site. I guess the RIAA is not only wanting to scare people away from filesharing but also from visiting the web at all and clicking hyperlinks since their IP might end up being logged!! As if that wasn’t done already anyways, seeing as to how just about every webserver logs activity and is even required to do so in most countries.
If you want to see it in action for yourself you can click the following link:

If you would wish to see a version with some nice basic graphics and even some CSS included you can check the following version:

Be aware on the last they are much more serious though with the warning, they place it in FULL CAPS. It is even that fact which made that warning even more of a laugh all over the web.
What will the future be though, will any form of filesharing became illegal since it could always be used for illegal activities as well? Since if it’s not Edonkey network being used, it’ll be something else like DC, IRC, etc. Which now already are being heavily used for illegal file sharing as well, will they be the next victims to the RIAA?
